Eat & Drink
These are our personal recommendations — places we return to every time we visit. All are within easy walking distance of the house unless noted.
In the old town
Maison de la Tarte — 33 Rue Jean Jaurès A boulangerie-pâtisserie that has been here since 1973. Out of this world. Go first thing in the morning — it opens at 6:15am — for pastries that will set the tone for the whole day. One of the best bakeries we’ve encountered anywhere.
Brasserie Le QG — 63 Rue Desaugiers (church square) Our daily go-to for coffee, a casual lunch, or an early evening drink. Right on the cathedral square — genuinely good value for the location, friendly staff, and a great spot for watching the old town go about its business.
Les Copains d’Abord — 107 Rue du Docteur Ciamin Traditional French cooking done properly and without pretension. Excellent value, warm atmosphere, rated 4.8/5 on Google for good reason. Book ahead — it fills up fast, especially in summer. One of our favourite restaurants in the area.
Village Pizza — 93 Rue du Docteur Ciamin A reliable neighbourhood pizzeria, very close to Les Copains d’Abord on the same street. Good for a relaxed dinner without needing to book.
La Cave Romaine — 114 Rue Camelin Pizza and pasta in a genuinely atmospheric setting — a vaulted Roman-era cellar down a side street. The setting alone is worth it, and the food is consistently good.
Bar du Marché — Old town market area Cocktails, good drinks, and decent food in the heart of the old village. A good spot for an aperitif before dinner or a lazy lunch.
At the marina (Port Fréjus)
Old School — Place des Galoubet, Port Fréjus Our favourite bar — a proper pub at the marina with around twenty beers on tap, tapas, burgers, an eclectic retro interior, and a terrace where you can watch the boats. Staff are genuinely knowledgeable about the beer. Excellent value for the location. About 15 minutes’ walk from the house, or a short drive.
A note on the port restaurants
Port Fréjus has plenty of restaurants along the waterfront. They’re convenient and scenic, but tend to be more expensive and more variable in quality than the old town. Old School is the exception and the reason we keep going back to the port.
Supermarkets & shops
The closest shop is the Casino next to the Office du Tourisme — perfect for picking up essentials on arrival. There’s also a Petit Casino a short walk away for everyday bits. For a larger shop, there’s a Leclerc on the outskirts of town.
